At Michael Lowe Opticians, we champion optimum eye care for all.

That’s why we’re raising awareness of National Eye Health Week 2018 — which runs from 24th – 30th September this year.

The message is strong but simple — your vision matters even more than you might realise, and regular sight tests can prevent a host of serious health conditions.

Here’s the lowdown.

Lifelong eye care

Poor eye health can affect you at every stage of life — from children at school not making the most of their lessons to elderly people not maintaining the quality of life they deserve.

And young adults and middle-aged people who’ve never needed eyewear before can also find their active lifestyles curbed when sight deteriorates unexpectedly.

In fact:

  • 2 million people in the UK are living with a level of sight loss that has a serious impact on their daily lives.
  • The eyes may be the proverbial window to the soul, but sight problems can also reflect wider health issues such as raised cholesterol and hypertension — with associated raised risk levels of heart disease and stroke.

But:

  • Half of this sight loss is avoidable and having an eye test at least once every two years detects early signs of conditions like glaucoma and enable early treatment.
  • Over 30 million people in the UK are entitled to NHS funded eye health treatments — find out here if you’re one of them.

Next steps

There are several steps to take when you want to be proactive about eye health.

First and foremost, book an appointment with your optician — we’re friendly, professional and passionate about providing bespoke treatment for each and every client.

Then:

  • Constantly monitor children’s eye health and take them for tests at least once every two years.
  • Eat a healthy diet that includes fruit, vegetables and fish.
  • Watch your weight — obesity can affect eye health.
  • Stop smoking — smokers are four times as likely to develop Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD).
  • Wear eye protection in bright sunlight.

Vision Matters, the organisation behind National Eye Health Week, also publishes Vista — a magazine packed with lifestyle tips for excellent eye health that’s worth flicking through.

And we’re always available to provide peace of mind on preventative eye care and quality eye wear that helps you experience life’s magical moments with crystal clarity.

Together, we’re tackling eye health issues with tenacity and tenderness every day.
